What is AIO and why is it more important than regular SEO?
Previously, the client opened a search, scrolled through ten links, and called two or three. Now the neural network asks and receives one answer with one or two names. We responded and received a call. We didn't get it - the competitor got it for free.
AIO (AI Search Optimization) is when you prepare your site and listings so language models can honestly recommend your business. Not keyword stuffing—facts, structure, trust. Below: how AIO differs from SEO, what actually drives results in Copilot and ChatGPT, and where owners most often break their domain themselves.
SEO and AIO solve different problems
SEO is tailored for search robots: indexing, position, click on snippet. AIO is tailored to the model’s response: you were named or not, with what wording, in what context.
In SEO, you can live in fifth position and get traffic. There is no fifth position in AIO. There are “named” and “not named”. For a local business, the difference is especially stark: a person does not compare fifteen sites, he trusts the assistant’s voice or text.
Classic SEO isn't dead. But if you optimize only for Google in "ten blue links" mode, you're preparing for the past. You also need an AI layer: llms.txt, schema, FAQ for commercial questions, consistent NAP data, and open bots where it's safe.
What models look at in practice
There's no public checklist from OpenAI or Google on "how to get into recommendations." But the same signals repeat in audits of hundreds of sites:
- Clear service and geography description. Not "quality service" but "dental implants in Austin, from $4,500, same-day booking."
- FAQ with real customer questions, not SEO paragraphs.
- Schema.org micro markup: Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product where appropriate.
- The llms.txt file with the correct URLs, not copy-pasted from someone else's domain.
- robots.txt without accidentally blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot if you want visibility there.
- Consistency: site, Google Business, Yelp, reviews—all say the same thing.
- External mentions: industry platforms, media, cases, non-inflated reviews.
The model does not “read the soul” of the brand. She collects an answer from what she can verify. Empty or inconsistent - selects a competitor with a cleaner signal.
E-E-A-T in AIO is not an acronym for a report. Experience: real cases, photos of work, deadlines. Expertise: who provides the service, licenses. Authoritativeness: mentions not only on your domain. Trust: same phone number, address, reviews without jumps. On the beauty salon website it is “master Anna, 8 years old, link to portfolio”, not “the best specialists in the city”.
Common question: should you pay for AI ads? Most commercial recommendations still run on organic signals. Classic search ads don't replace the AIO layer. Google Ads without a bot-ready site is double spend: you pay for the click, but Copilot still sends people to brands the model knows better.
Why “we already have SEO” doesn’t help
Typical picture: search rankings are fine, leads are scarce, Copilot names others. The SEO agency reports on rankings while the owner misses that the channel shifted.
The reasons are banal. The texts were written based on keys, not on questions. There are no prices or terms on the site. Bots were denied access “to prevent them from stealing.” Schema is placed crookedly or only on the main one. FAQ - three paragraphs of marketing. llms.txt was copied from a SaaS template with someone else's paths.
SEO and AIO overlap, but do not duplicate each other. It is possible to be at the top of the search and not be present in the AI responses if the structure for the models is not assembled. And vice versa: a strong AIO layer sometimes improves the classic search results, because the site becomes clearer for any content consumers.
Online stores lose out in AI differently than services. Availability, price, delivery, returns, comparison with analogues are important there. Marketplaces often take away the answer if your site does not have clear cards and schema Product. B2B depends on cases, deadlines, licenses. A universal text “about neural networks” is not enough; you need facts for your type of transaction.
Myth: “AI is still hallucinating, optimization is pointless.” Hallucinations happen, but commercial recommendations are often based on repeated sources. If there are no consistent facts about you anywhere, the model is not hallucinating about you, it is simply naming someone else. This is not a bug, it's emptiness on your part.
Queries where they lose most often: “who do you recommend”, “where is it cheaper”, “who is closer”, “who has good reviews”. This is not information traffic. The person is ready to buy. The loss of one such answer hits harder than minus a hundred impressions in a tail search.
For local business, AIO often beats classic SEO on leads. People don't scroll fifteen sites—they trust one voice or one paragraph in Copilot. Getting there is harder than buying a Google Ads click, but cheaper long-term if you do it right the first time. Get it wrong—fixing costs more than starting with an audit.
Where the owners break it themselves
After a couple of webinars about “neurosearch”, people rush to edit the site without cutting. Hence the same mistakes.
Generation of “unique” texts
Ten pages about “the best company in town” without numbers or cases. Models cut this stuff. Worse: trust in the entire domain decreases.
Close all bots
“Why do we need ChatGPT on the site?” They closed it and at the same time hit the desired crawler. Visibility in one of the platforms is reset to zero. The competitor is open at this time.
Schema “for show”
Wrong type, fake rating, office address that does not exist. Contradiction with cards. AI selects a safe source.
One llms.txt and that's it
The file is useful, but does not replace content, cards and reviews. Read more in the article about llms.txt: there is an analysis of why one file is not enough and how not to point the bot to the wrong pages.
Ignore mobile version
The mobile site cuts the block with prices or FAQ into an accordion without text in HTML. The bot sees emptiness. Check not only the desktop, otherwise the AIO layer is half dead.
How to “ruin” visibility without malicious intent
Figuratively, yes, you can. In fact it's like this:
- Sudden blocking of bots after they have already moved.
- Different content for people and bots on one page.
- Mass deletions of services without redirects - for the model you disappeared.
- Fake reviews with three stars in the cards - AI chooses a competitor.
- Edits without measuring GEO Score - after a month it is not clear what broke the answers.
The model is not offended. Stops quoting you. Clients ask for assistants and hear other people's names.
How to measure rather than guess
AIO without numbers is faith. You need a platform snapshot: Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini. In Leadsy that's GEO Score and a breakdown across 56 parameters in the express audit.
Minimum ritual once a month: run the URL through an audit, ask assistants three typical queries in the niche, compare with a competitor from the report. If you are absent three times, the problem is not in the “mood of the algorithm.” Write down the answers verbatim: the wording is also a signal, not just the fact of mention.
Next is a full audit with technical specifications for the developer or turnkey implementation. Without priorities, you fix headers while robots.txt lies.
Normal procedure
If the goal is applications from AI, and not a “positions in the top” report:
- Free express audit: GEO Score, holes, bot availability. From the main.
- Critical by priority: robots.txt, NAP, FAQ, price list in HTML.
- Schema and llms.txt are the second stage, not instead of content.
- Full audit with technical specifications or turnkey implementation if there is no team.
Only the first step—diagnosis—makes sense on its own. Further, without a map, treat the symptom, not the cause.
Pricing: tariffs page. Questions: FAQ.
Where to start today
Don't touch robots.txt. Do not copy someone else's llms.txt. Do not upload “neuro-texts” without numbers.
Start with a snapshot. Paste your URL in the audit below. In a couple of minutes you'll see what Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini see—and where you lose to competitors.
Many critical errors are good news: it’s clear why there were no applications. The bad: every day without edits - applications from those whom the AI has already recommended.
After the audit, ask out loud: “Who would you recommend for [service] in [city].” Three times in a row foreign brands - you are not included in the recommendations. It's measurable, not a feeling.
“We have a website” and “we are recommended” are two different things. A website without AIO is like a storefront in a closed shopping center: formally there is, but there are no clients.
Six platforms in one Leadsy report: Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and more. Block one bot—you lose a channel, not "savings."
Pre-edit mini-checklist: one phone everywhere, site prices match listings, FAQ from ten real calls, robots.txt doesn't block GPTBot, schema without fake ratings. Fifteen minutes—and you'll know if you'd show this site to a colleague.
If the GEO Score is green, compare it with a niche competitor. The gap is important: you are 62, the leader is 81 - he will be the answer.
On Copilot separately: how to get into recommendations. When an agency promises AI promotion, ask about robots.txt, schema, and before/after measurements. Blog posts alone are old SEO in a new wrapper.
A free audit does not oblige you to purchase a full analysis. But it stops leaving room for guessing. And fortune telling in AIO costs more than any tariff.
